After having spent a few months in lockdown, I feel that every one of us has come to appreciate the importance of our home environment that much more. It is true that our homes are an extension of who we are, they tell our stories and are extensions of our personalities.
We are all familiar with that feeling of comfort when visiting a well designed hotel or restaurant, it is as if you could stay there forever, in contrast to a poorly design space that you want to leave. It is the colours, lighting, furnishings, details, proportions, the layout of the room etc. that will create that feeling of comfort, familiarity and safety.
Probably never before did we have to question our space layout as much as we did during the months of lockdown. Its effects have been amplified by the whole family having to share the spaces together for a few months straight. I know this because reconfiguring layouts, the way rooms work along with how to select the paint colours has been one of the most requested services during these past few months. Home being our sanctuary is nothing new and the effects of our home on our mental and physical wellbeing have been known for a long time. Many studies and books have been written offering advise on what to do to make your home be the best it can be, and your friends will swear by things that have worked for them. Our home has an impact on the way we feel on daily basis, for example we all know that the amount of light we are exposed to can help with feelings of anxiety and depression. However when deciding what to do in your home it is worth keeping in mind that we are all unique and our minds process things in different ways so someone’s sanctuary of minimalism is the other person's interpretation of emptiness.
A well-designed home will improve your quality of life by promoting mental wellness, happiness, productivity, comfort, and safety. Michelle Ogundehin a multi award-winning former editor in chief of Elle Decor UK could have not said it better,
“I want to completely debunk any ideas of home-making as something frivolous. It’s absolutely fundamental to good health and happiness. A home that actively supports your wellbeing can be a game-changer, your secret superpower in today’s profoundly unpredictable world”
