When I became an Interior Designer I decided I wanted the furniture that I designed to references traditional construction techniques. To me, the definition of modern luxury embodies the use of natural materials and the purity of form, creating pieces that will transgress time and trends, pieces that will develop character and become more beautiful with use. I love the feeling that you get from vintage furniture pieces; that there is a story with each piece, it gives it so much more value and interest in my opinion.
When you go house hunting and you cannot find the house that is right for you, your friends will tell you to get the one with good bones and everything else can be refurbished. It is the same with good quality furniture when it is made well it will always be a good investment, even when you move home, you can always refurbish or adapt a quality piece of furniture to fit to its new surroundings.
I love it when I get an opportunity to design furniture for my clients, there is nothing more gratifying than creating something that will be that perfect piece for a space. I also have to admit that I love the idea that I have created something new that will bring joy, collect stories and be an object of admiration. All of my furniture designs are a true celebration of quality craftsmanship, purity of form and authentic materials. I take a lot of inspiration from 20th-century styles be it from fashion or from some of my favourite designers like Jean Michel Frank known for his simple forms to the Lalannes who took so much inspiration from the nature around them.
A good home design is an investment into oneself and oneself’s happiness in their home.
This is how it starts
The concept I create for my client will give me an inspiration for the shapes and materials for the whole home. I will typically scribble a few different rough sketches and then play around with them deciding on the best one. To present it to my client I will typically do a rendered elevation or model up the piece in 3D, I will also get the samples of the finishes made so that the piece becomes more real to the touch.
Once the client loves it, I will start to create construction drawings for all of the pieces. We then have a workshop with the furniture maker to make sure it all works well, no detail is left to chance.
Once in production I will typically visit the to see how things are coming along and if I feel anything needs tweaking still before the pieces are final.
